What is a HEPA Filter Vacuum Cleaner?
When removing asbestos, it is a strict requirement that any vacuum used is fitted with a HEPA filter. These units are also commonly referred to as “H-Class” vacuum cleaners and are specifically designed for hazardous material control.
What often surprises people is that the clean-up phase of an asbestos removal job can take just as long as the removal itself. This is because thorough decontamination is critical to ensure no fibres or fine particles remain once the visible material has been taken away.
At North West Asbestos Solutions, it is our responsibility to ensure every site is left completely clean, safe, and free from any residual asbestos contamination. We achieve this by following strict industry control measures, with HEPA-filter vacuuming playing a key role in the final stages of the process.
These specialised vacuums are not the same as standard household units and are not available in general retail stores. They are purpose-built for hazardous environments and are significantly more advanced, and more expensive, than typical domestic vacuum cleaners.
HEPA filters are capable of capturing extremely fine, micron-sized particles, which is essential when dealing with asbestos. In fact, “HEPA” stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air, and refers to a filtration standard designed to trap very small airborne contaminants that would otherwise be invisible and easily inhaled.
Without this level of filtration and equipment, safe asbestos removal and site clearance would not be possible. It is a vital part of ensuring that once the work is complete, the area is left in a condition that is safe for reoccupation.
