What is an Asbestos Management Plan?

An Asbestos Management Plan most often comes after the development of an Asbestos Register (which is a requirement to have in workplaces built prior to 2003). It sets out how the identified asbestos within that workplace will be managed.

An Asbestos Management Plan must adhere to the Australian Code of Practice and include information about the following:

  • The identification of asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACM) and a link to the asbestos register and locations of signs and labels

  • Decisions and reasons for the decisions about the management of asbestos at the workplace - safe work procedures and control measures

  • Procedures for detailing accidents, incidents or emergencies involving asbestos at the workplace; and

  • Workers carrying out work involving asbestos

It may also include risk assessment and risk management, timelines for remediation, responsibilities and procedures.
