What Is Air Monitoring During Asbestos Removal and When Is It Required?

Air monitoring is a key control measure used during asbestos removal projects to confirm that airborne fibre levels remain within acceptable limits and that control measures are effective.

In Western Australia, air monitoring is commonly required during licensed asbestos removal works where there is a risk of airborne fibre release. This includes commercial, government, and industrial projects involving friable materials, high-risk non-friable removal, or works conducted within occupied buildings. Air monitoring is typically coordinated either internally by our team or by an independent consultant and involves calibrated air sampling pumps connected to filter cassettes positioned at strategic locations around the work area. Samples are then sent to a NATA accredited laboratory to ensure fibre count is below the safe range during and after the project.

At North West Asbestos & Demolition Solutions, air monitoring requirements are considered during the planning phase of every project. While they are not required for most Class B removal work, we stay compliant to any Asbestos Management Plans provided by the client.
